Faith United Methodist Church had its start in 1880 when Rev. F. W. Voegelein visited Sacramento with the hopes of starting a church for German immigrants. Many of the earliest members were carpenters, bakers, farmers, and railroad shop workers who lived in a German neighborhood in the vicinity of the church. The church was incorporated on November 4, 1881 as the Ebenezer Church of the Evangelical Association of North America and located downtown near the State Capitol.
Over the years, after many denominational mergers, in 1946 the church became The First Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church. In 1961 the church and its adjoining property at 10th and P Streets were bought by the State of California as part of their Master Building Plan. In March 1964 the congregation acquired the current facility at 3600 J Street and the first Sunday service was held on June 7th with the dedication of the art glass window, The Good Shepherd, brought from the previous building. In 1968 Faith United Methodist Church was consecrated with the merger of the Methodist Episcopal and Evangelical United Brethren denominations.
One of the ongoing strengths of Faith Church has been its outreach to the Sacramento community and beyond. The members have supported many special projects with their time, talents and financial giving. Faith has contributed to the Central Downtown Food Closet since it opened in 1983. In 1999 Faith began participating in Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child with shoebox gifts that are sent to children around the world. Faith Church makes its facilities available to the local community as well: The YMCA has used the church gymnasium for a before-and-after school child care program since 1988 and we currently have four recovery groups holding weekly meetings in Faith’s Social Hall.
Since the beginning, the work and mission of the church continues to be carried out by dedicated Christians. Besides the normal adult Bible Study classes, Faith offers other Fellowship opportunities such as coffee hours, special meals & potlucks, a guest speaker series and family game nights. Today, as always, Faith’s members exhibit a deep caring for the local community, members and visitors by being a friendly, loving and caring congregation where all are welcome.
